It symbolizes the various emotions of the people saying that the 'life is a stage'. just as you know a famous quote my William shakes spear- everyone's life takes one domain emotion in their life along with other emotions. some people's domain emotion is happiness, and some other people domain emotion is sadness. this way the painting speaks that life is a stage which is combined with various emotions of various people which come and go like the tides and seasons from time to time.
